Recreation Assistant

Administrative Support (includes but not limited to):
Provides customer service to patrons using the facility, to include:
greeting customers; checking identification cards to ensure only authorized users are entering facility; issuing and receiving gear/equipment; and registering patrons for facility use, events, and/or classes. Answers telephone, providing information in regards to facility hours of operation, upcoming special events and programs, etc. Completes the Daily Activity Reports, handling cash where fees apply, verifying the amount of money collected and dropping the cashier bag in the drop safe. Assists in planning, scheduling, and publicizing various activities and maintaining related supplies in order to attract and motivate participants. Oversees the sale of retail items associated with activities. Evaluates the effectiveness of ongoing Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) fitness activities from the standpoint of participants' responses, resources, and program objectives. Monitors patrons, volunteers and contractors at the assigned program/event and reports any issues to management. Assists in the selection of fitness, sports, and aquatics activities to be offered, both within the required basic program categories and additional ones possible through available resources and desirable in terms of participant's interests and needs. Instructional Support (includes but not limited to):
Monitors assigned participants in indoor and outdoor activities to include intramural sporting events. Conducts instructional classes in the assigned recreational area. Performs basic fitness orientation; identifies and corrects unsafe fitness techniques. Demonstrates procedures common to the activities and instructs in the use of related equipment. Establishes/reviews the schedule of events, conducts tours, sets-up/prepares gymnasiums/facilities/playing fields prior to scheduled start time for events (e.g., lap swim, lifeguard training, exercise programs, races, pool parties, sporting events, etc.). Ensures adherence to regulations and safety procedures. Facility/Equipment Maintenance (includes but not limited to):
Ensures facility and sporting fields are open and/or closed at the posted time. Monitors and checks the security of premises. Monitors activity within the facility, circulating among the patrons to assist with basic use of equipment/gear and to maintain good order and discipline. Ensures athletic playing surfaces are properly maintained, safe, and ready for play. Assists in properly cleaning and maintaining equipment/facilities, maintains inventory, performs general janitorial services to ensure interior spaces are in a clean, neat, and orderly state at all times (e.g., sweeping and mopping floors; dusting and cleaning workout areas, mirrors, bathrooms, and locker areas; straightening equipment and accessories, etc.). Makes minor repairs to facilities and equipment when appropriate and assists with outdoor maintenance. Reports maintenance problems, material deficiencies, and unsafe conditions or discrepancies that cannot be repaired in-house to the supervisor. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION Knowledge of MWR policies, rules, and regulations involving the work area. Knowledge of basic arithmetic to compute charges, disperse change accurately, and prepare reports. Knowledge of cash handling procedures. Knowledge of basic fitness, aquatics and sports principles. Knowledge of safe use and operation of fitness equipment, facility operations, and basic fitness equipment maintenance/repair. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) and others as they relate to fitness, sports and aquatics programming. Skill and ability to provide fitness, aquatics and sports training or orientation. Ability to competently and independently carry out day to day recreation operations. Ability to develop and effectively deliver presentations and/or training. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS Works under direct supervision of the Fitness and/or Sports, Aquatics Program Managers or Fitness Facility and Maintenance Manager. Incumbent uses initiative in completing daily/routine assignments and receives general guidance and supervision. Supervisor provides advice and guidance regarding special problems or unusual situations. GUIDELINES Guidelines consist of Navy Fitness, Sports & Aquatics Support program standards, departmental policies, regulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and augmented regulations and procedures issued at local level. Generally accepted procedures found in the fitness, aquatics or sports industry and adopted by reputable organizations are also used. COMPLEXITY Work consists of providing physical fitness information for the physiological needs of each customer and or command in addition to ensuring operational efficiency in the recreation/aquatics facility during the incumbent's assigned shift, requiring the completion of multiple tasks simultaneously. The development and implementation of fitness classes must be unique and proper progression and specificity must be applied. Incumbent interacts with a wide variety of patrons who seek physical fitness recommendations; consequently, incumbent must stay up to date on basic information pertaining to the Fitness, Sports, and Aquatics Departments and should actively promote programs and MWR events. SCOPE AND EFFECT Work involves performance of specific routine operations that include few tasks or procedures, but which may have a significant impact on the well-being of patrons and staff. Incumbent is responsible for applying program policies and procedures to a considerable variety of customary problems, questions and situations that are typical of the activities, services and operations of a recreation/aquatics program. Duties performed contribute directly to the military community's readiness, physical fitness, morale, and quality of life. Incumbent promotes physical fitness and healthful living, which has a positive influence in improving the morale, physical and mental well-being of all customers. PERSONAL CONTACTS Contacts are with all levels of active-duty personnel, retired military, family members, Command Fitness Leaders, recreation co-workers, staff workers, Department of Defense (DoD) officials, Command officials, security, police, and the civilian community, including vendors, contractors, and local organizations, DoD civilians, MWR personnel, environmental and health inspectors, maintenance personnel, and facility patrons. PURPOSE OF CONTACTS The purpose of contacts is to plan, implement, and administer Recreation, Sports and Aquatics Programs; motivate participants; arrange staff assistance; resolve problems; enforce policies and procedures; provide customer service; increase participation; and promote quality of life programs. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work includes extended hours of sitting and standing. Exercise demonstrations and/or prolonged hours may be required. Must have the ability to perform moderately strenuous physical labor, lifting objects weighing up to 45 pounds unassisted and heavier weight with assistance. WORK ENVIRONMENT The recreation activities overall involve everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of the recreation specialty. There will be periods of time when the employee participates in a specific activity (e.g. leading physical training, moving equipment, carrying aquatics equipment, etc.) that will require special safety precautions. Facilities may be subjected to varying conditions (e.g., variable weather conditions, variable temperatures, humidity, etc.). OTHER REQUIREMENTS Must have or be able to obtain and maintain the following certification within 30 days of hire:

Automated External Defibrillator Certification Blood-borne Pathogen Certification Navy Basic Fitness Certification Occasional travel of less than 10% may be required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Written Inquires (NACI), upon hiring and renew every 5 years and/or a Child Care National Agency Check with Inquires when there is regular contact with children under the age of 18. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
