Summary:
Fire watches are used to prevent and/or extinguish fires at the incipient (beginning) stage. They monitor the hot work sites to ensure that conditions do not change when combustible materials cannot be effectively removed, protected or shielded. Firewatches also require specialized training and are assigned to minimize damage that may be caused by a fire. If a fire occurs, they take appropriate actions to protect all workers.
POTENTIAL HAZARDS:
1.Combustible materials that cannot be removed, protected or shielded.
2.Climbing up and down ship's stairways (called ladders) with a 27lb fire extinguisher.
3.Loud noises.
4.Transfer of heat from one space to another or to spaces below.
5.Fire in adjacent spaces with a need for rapid evacuation and egress.
6.Coverings used to protect equipment may not be fire retardant.
REQUIREMENTS:
1.Personal protective equipment (PPE - SAFTEY SHOES, SAFETY GLASSES W/TINTED LENSES, HARDHAT, RESPIRATOR, HEARING PROTECTION, and VEST) is required to be worn.
2.A fire watch must be posted during hot work when any of the following conditions are present:
3.Slag, weld splatter, or sparks might pass through an opening and cause a fire.
4.Fire-resistant guards or curtains are not used to prevent ignition of combustible materials on or near decks, bulkheads, partitions, or overheads.
5.Combustible material closer than 35 feet to the hot work cannot be removed, protected with flame-proof covers, or shielded with metal or fire-resistant guards or curtains.
6.Hot work is performed on or near insulation, combustible coatings, or sandwich-type construction that cannot be shielded, cut back, or removed, or in a space within a sandwich type construction that cannot be inerted.
7.Combustible materials adjacent to the opposite sides of bulkheads, decks, overheads, metal partitions, or sandwich-type construction may be ignited by conduction or radiation.
8.Hot work is close enough to cause ignition through heat radiation or conduction on:
a.Insulated pipes, bulkheads, decks, partitions, or overheads
b.Combustible materials and/or coatings.
c.Work is close enough to unprotected combustible pipe or cable runs to cause ignition.
d.A Marine Chemist, a Coast Guard-authorized person, or a shipyard Competent Person requires that a fire watch be posted
9.A fire watch must not be assigned to other duties while hot work is in progress. A fire watch must:
a.Have a clear view of, and immediate access to, all areas included in the fire watch.
b.Be able to communicate with workers exposed to hot work.
c.Be authorized to stop work if necessary and restore safe conditions within the hot work area.
d.Remain in the hot work area for at least 30 minutes after completion of the hot work unless the employer or its representative surveys the exposed area and makes a determination that there is no further fire hazard.
e.Be trained to detect fires that occur in areas exposed to the hot work.
f.Attempt to extinguish any incipient stage fires in the hot work area that are within the capability of available equipment and within the fire watch's training qualifications.
g.Alert employees of any fire beyond the incipient stage.
h.Activate the alarm if unable to extinguish fire in the areas exposed to the hot work.
i.Be physically capable of performing fire watch duties.
EDUCATION AND
Experience:
No specific educational requirement. Must be able to read and comprehend the Firewatch training. Must understand the EXTREME sensitivity of the nature of Fire watching and the duties and responsibilities thereof. No experience necessary. Must be able to communicate an EMERGENCY with the nature of the emergency, type and location to workers and Ship's Crew.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1.Work involves considerable stooping, bending, and working in overhead structures and on scaffolds.
2.May be required to lift and/or carry equipment/objects greater than 50lbs.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Typical environment found in the shipyard and ship repair industry.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
