5 Hours/Day; 252 Days/Year; 12 Months/Year; Grade OO General Responsibilities The position is responsible for maintaining order and discipline, preventing crime, investigating violations of school board policies and the law, and ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors on Norfolk Public Schools premises and sponsored events.
The work requires the incumbent selected to be able to identify persons committing violations of school board policies, criminal acts and safely detain and apprehend persons violating the law on school premises.
The position requires the ability to develop and maintain excellent rapport with students to encourage proper behavior and cooperation with school administrators, law enforcement, and other public safety agencies in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulations.
Incumbents must be able to select and apply appropriate and effective crime prevention, intervention, and enforcement methods in different situations.
This position rotates duties among several schools throughout each day, traveling via division-owned vehicle.
The duties of the Security Officer Zone Supervisor are varied, and each officer will be assigned to an area to support several schools.
Education and Experience Currently Certified as School Security Officers or School Resource Officers in Virginia Public Schools with at least four years of experience in School Security in a Virginia Public School System or any combination of progressive experience in a public safety setting.
Requires a high school diploma or possession of a GED, a valid driver's license.
An associate degree in criminal justice, criminology, social work, or related courses is preferred.
Essential Job Functions Provide routine/random patrols of buildings and grounds to an assigned geographical area to provide security services to schools within that geographical area or other areas within the City of Norfolk as needed.
Respond to calls for assistance at schools.
Conduct continuous surveillance and patrol of assigned schools.
Assist in maintaining building safety and security through routine/random buildings/ground checks, primarily at assigned schools.
Identify those persons responsible for violations of school rules and regulations or laws.
Report all safety hazards and unsafe conditions to the building administrators.
Assist with fire drills and other emergency evacuations.
Access schools during emergencies.
Act in an advisory capacity regarding the possible need to involve law enforcement or other resources.
Investigate and complete all security incident reports.
Provide assistance necessary to expedite a thorough investigation and coordinate with the administrator.
Assist with the preparation of training and conduct security officer training.
Assist the Transportation Department in monitoring the safety of students during designated bus routes and bus stops as needed.
Notify the Security Administrative Team, school administrators, police, fire, or other appropriate authorities of security or emergency situations.
Review and assist in recovering physical and video evidence of incidents.
Maintain accountability of materials and equipment used by security officers.
Assist with School Safety Audits at elementary schools.
Assist with employee fingerprinting and creating employee identification badges.
Render First Aid and CPR.
Ability to work independently.
Performs other duties, as necessary, to provide the care, welfare, safety, and security of all in NPS.
Primary Location VARIOUS Salary Range $24.
91 - $42.
38 / Per Hour Shift Type Full-Time.
Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
