Summary:
Performs manual labor chores to assist mechanics and helpers to accomplish daily tasks.
Essential Functions:
1.Loads vehicles using hand truck or dolly.
2.Cleans ships, piers, dry-docks and other working areas using broom and water hose.
3.Opens shipping crates using hammer or pinch-bar, sort's lumber, metals and other scrap materials.
4.Collects trash.
5.Removes paint and scales from ships' metal surfaces using hand or powered wire brushes.
6.Delivers material and tools to work site.
7.May be employed as a Fire Watch:
a.Personal protective equipment (PPE - SAFETY SHOES, SAFETY GLASSES W/TINTED LENSES, HARDHAT, RESPIRATOR, HEARING PROTECTION, and VEST) is required to be worn.
b.A fire watch must be posted during hot work when any of the following conditions are present:
i.Slag, weld splatter, or sparks or any activity that may cause a fire
ii.Remain in the hot work area for at least 30 minutes after completion of the hot work unless the employer or its representative surveys the exposed area and makes a determination that there is no further fire hazard.
iii.Be trained to detect fires that occur in areas exposed to the hot work.
iv.Attempt to extinguish any incipient stage fires in the hot work area that are within the capability of available equipment and within the fire watch's training qualifications.
v.Alert employees of any fire beyond the incipient stage.
vi.Activate the alarm if unable to extinguish fire in the areas exposed to the hot work.
vii.Be physically capable of performing fire watch duties.
Qualifications:
No prior experience or training necessary; however, it is preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1.Work involves considerable stooping, bending, and working in overhead structures and on scaffolds.
2.May be required to lift and/or carry equipment/objects greater than 50lbs.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Typical environment found in the shipyard and ship repair industry.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
