59 PM EasternDescription The Norfolk Department of Utilities is seeking qualified candidates for an Engineering Technician II that supports our GIS and Field Engineering Teams.
Duties involve the daily input and manipulation of GIS data, assisting customers, and conducting field investigations for the Engineering and Technology Division.
Essential Functions Essential functions include but are not limited to the following:
Uses Raw Water, Water Distribution, Sewer Gravity, Sewer Force Main, and Sewer Pump Station As-Builts to record the respective assets to permanent record in the Utilities' GIS Enterprise database.
Performs a broad range of GIS tasks related to data collection, maintenance, display, and analysis.
Interacts with customers for water and sewer tap orders, and records requests.
Interacts with employees, other City departments, and external customers.
Reads and interprets City utility maps, plans, and technical documents.
Compiles, digitizes, edits, and prepares high quality maps and exhibits for the Department, City Council, interdepartmental agencies, and the public.
Prepares, revises, and maintains a wide variety of computer-generated maps and cartographic products.
Creates, edits, and updates Geodatabases as needed.
Conducts and/or assists with field investigations as needed.
Verify manholes before collecting by opening and visually inspecting them.
Collects and processes GIS and GPS data for utility structures Transfer and set elevation grades.
Perform level loops and close at high accuracy Education/Experience Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with at least six months of advanced study or equivalent experience.
Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
One-year experience in drafting, GIS, surveying, sub-professional engineering or a directly related field One year experience creating and editing data in ArcGIS, drafting, surveying, sub-professional engineering or a directly related field preferred.
Additional Information & Requirements Requires ability to use a personal computer.
Requires valid driver's license.
Must be able to work in all-weather conditions.
Requires a broad knowledge in GIS, related to data collection, maintenance, display, and analysis.

This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.
This position is an Essential position which means you may be required to work extended, rotating, after hours, nights, weekends and/or holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather.

Retirement If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit.
This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit.
This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education.
Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply.
