1K a year GENERAL SUMMARY Under the direction of a physician or advanced practice provider (APP), the Athletic Trainer manages the needs of the patient within a clinic setting and provides athletic training intervention by reviewing, revising, and implementing techniques or discharging athletic training services as deemed appropriate.
Practices according to the NATABOC (National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification) standards of professional practice and complies with all the legal requirements regulating the practice of athletic training.
Reports to department leadership.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performs appropriate patient intake to determine medical history, chief complaint and risk factors.
Performs physical examinations to establish a diagnosis and prognosis prior to intervention; communicates all pertinent information to the physician, APP, parent, physical therapist, school athletic trainer, and/or other staff as appropriate.
Develops and implements injury and illness prevention strategies for athletes and the physically active.
Establishes a plan of care for athletes in consultation with the supervising physician/advanced practice provider.
Manages the needs of the patient based on the examination, diagnosis, prognosis, goals and outcomes of the planned interventions for identified impairments.
Applies splints, braces or casts as appropriate, assesses for proper fit and support, and educates patient/parent on appropriate wear, care, and signs/symptoms of concern.
Maintains clinic flow by directing support staff to ensure patient/ parent satisfaction, patient safety, quality of care and efficiency of clinic operations.
Educates students and parents regarding injury/disease management including, but not limited to, use of assistive devices, use of splints/braces, exercise/activity recommendations/limitations, healthy lifestyle behaviors and proper nutrition for the physically active.
Assists administrative staff as needed (diagnostic scheduling, rescheduling of patients, surgery scheduling, etc).
Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS Certification by BOC and licensed to practice as an Athletic Trainer in the state of Virginia.
Licensure, certification and/or registration with National Athletic Trainers Association Certification.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree in Athletic Training or an accredited educational program by the NATA-BOC.
Master's Degree preferred.
Previous experience in health care setting preferred.
Knowledge and experience in the administration of a variety of assessment tools, treatment plans and equipment.
Knowledge of athletic training treatment and modalities.
CPR training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.
Valid driver's license required for travel to various satellite locations in the immediate area WORKING CONDITIONS Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.
Frequent exposure to communicable disease and moderately adverse working condition due to performance of certain patient care activities.
